The day you finally get to hold your baby in your arms should be treated with the utmost respect and care. You and your birth team will work together to support and honor the space you have chosen to birth in. The most important reason I hear for staying at home is the ability to control your privacy level and only have birth team members around you that you have gotten to know well during your prenatal care. You can also eat and drink what you would like, and have the freedom to move around your own house at will. You get to wear your own clothes, listen to your own music/TV and sleep in your own bed.
Wantina does highly recommend all first time mothers hire a Doula (with verified training) to support them on their birth team. Wantina attends every birth and also has a senior student with her. There is often a new student or a birth assistant who comes in at the end of the labor, stays through the birth, and then helps with cleanup. So your family should be prepared to have 2-4 extra adults in your house at the time of birth. Birth Photographers are highly welcome, just ask Wantina for contact information if you would like one.
In early labor, your birth team may come and go as you need or request information or support. Usually you have the full birth team in attendance as you request, depending on what your labor pattern is. We provide the support for you to birth in any position you choose. There is always a birth stool present at every birth. There are birth tubs for you to choose to use in labor or for birth. We strive to present multiple choices to aid in your comfort through this experience.
After the baby is born, we generally stay 2-3 hours after. The first hour we strongly recommend the baby remain skin to skin and initiate breastfeeding. We are filling out paperwork, assessing vitals of mother and baby, and the assistants start cleaning up and getting your house back to its normal order. Wantina always does a complete newborn exam. We do weigh and measure the newborn, and offer footprints if you want them. If you are doing placenta encapsulation, we aid in getting that process started.
